About General Council

The United Church of Canada's General Council is a national gathering that meets every three years to elect a new Moderator and approve new church policies. In 2009, the gathering was held from August 9 to 15 at the University of British Columbia Okanagan in Kelowna, B.C.

About the Theme

Have you ever watched a potter work? Maybe you have turned a wet pot on a wheel yourself. Maybe you have worked with clay, sculpting a story with only the earth and your bare hands.

Moderator's Invitation

The Moderator shares his thoughts on electing commissioners who will come together to discern how God is shaping our church.

Nominees for Moderator

Mardi Tindal, from Hamilton Conference, has been elected as the next Moderator of The United Church of Canada.

Location and Venue

The 40th General Council will take place August 9 to 15, 2009, at the University of British Columbia (UBC) Okanagan in Kelowna, B.C., hosted by the Kamloops-Okanagan Presbytery of B.C. Conference.

A Greener Council

The Agenda and Planning Team is committed to reducing the carbon footprint of the planning and implementation of GC40 wherever we are able, so that we can build a climate-friendly event.
